The White House Press Secretary, Mr. Robert Gibbs, announced today that President Barack Obama was traveling to the South Pacific and that included Australia.  Obama will commemorate the 70th Anniversary of formal diplomatic realtions between the United States and Australia.  Mr. Gibbs also said that part of the President’s visit was to broaden and strengthen the partnership with the United States and Australia regarding national security and prosperity.

Whilst down under, President Obama will hold talks with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on key issues such as economic recovery, climage change, clean energy and the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Rudd’s office released a statement early this morning saying:  “President Obama will be a most welcome guest on his first official visit. Australia’s relationship with the United States of America is our most important international partnership. We are allies, we are trading partners, and we co-operate on international challenges confronting all nations.”

President Obama last met Prime Minister Rudd at the White House when the Prime Minister paid a special visit to Washington in November on his return from the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Trinidad & Tobago.
